Heiltä Elser kuulee yrityksensä epäonnistuneen: mies, jonka hän halusi tappaa lopettaakseen juuri alkaneen maailmansodan verenvuodatuksen, poistui paikalta vain 13 minuuttia ennen räjähdystä. Nebe ja Müller kuulustelevat Elseriä useita päiviä, ja useita päiviä hän kieltäytyy vastaamasta kysymyksiin. Kunnes hän lopulta tunnustaa – ja kertoo tekonsa tarinan.
