Armstrongin rinnalla seisoo vaimo Janet, rautaisa tahtonainen, joka huolehtii kodista ja pojista, kun poissaoleva isä ja aviomies hautautuu haravoimaan fysiikan kirjoja. Tyttären kuoleman jälkeen mies uppoutuu työhönsä entistäkin enemmän, ja pian hänelle avautuu uusia työmahdollisuuksia NASA:n avaruusohjelmassa.
