Neuvostoliitto oli vuonna 1939 miehittänyt Viron ja 55 000 virolaista oli värvätty puna-armeijaan Saksan vapautettua/miehitettyä viron 1941, 72 000 nuorta miestä oli liittynyt saksan armeijaan. Virolaiset joutuivat siis taistelemaan toisiaan vastaan sodassa, jossa he olivat pakotettuja sotimaan muiden kuin omiensa puolesta. Vuonna 1944 virolaiset olivat joutuneet suurvaltapolitiikan välikappaleiksi ja kävi miten kävi, virolaiset kansakuntana häviäsivät. Valter Hein ja Karl Tammik ovat Sinimäillä ennen muuta virolaisina puolustamassa isänmaansa itsenäisyyttä, eivät Suur-Saksan rajoja. Pojat ovat valmiita pyyhkimään takalistonsa Hitlerin kuvalla, jonka saavat puoluepampulta kunnianosoituksena hyvin tehdystä työstä. Ilman saksalaisia ei kuitenkaan ole toivoakaan vastarinnasta. Syyskuun puolessa välissä kaikki on Viron kohdalta ohi. Puna-armeija ajaa Virossa saksalaisia takaa kohdaten usein heidän sijaan virolaisia Waffen-SS -joukkoja.
