Lancée pour un marathon de neuf ans et de près de 4,7 milliards de kilomètres, la sonde a survolé la planète naine Pluton et Choron, sa plus grosse lune, afin de recueillir des informations sur leurs compositions géologiques, leurs reliefs et leurs atmosphères. En juillet 2015, arrivée enfin à bon port, New Horizons a parcouru Pluton à basse altitude plusieurs heures durant avant de poursuivre sa course en direction de la ceinture de Kuiper, ultime étape de son long voyage. Après avoir été collectées et stockées dans des enregistreurs numériques, les précieuses données envoyées jusqu'à la Terre ont commencé à être étudiées, dressant une nouvelle carte de la planète naine. Parmi les premières surprises, on note les similitudes semblant se dessiner entre Pluton et la planète Mars.
