Un jeune lycéen, Yuuji Sakai, voit le monde se figer autour de lui alors qu'il rentrait tranquillement de l'école. Apparaissent alors 2 monstres dévorant les gens, comme suspendus dans le temps, autour de Yuuji. Alors que le monstre s'intéresse à cet humain qui peut encore se déplacer, une jeune fille à l'aura de feu, une Flame haze, apparaît et tranche la Rinne, ainsi que Yuuji. Celui-ci découvre alors qu'il est déjà décédé et a été remplacé par une torche, une âme temporaire de substitution. L'amie qui l'accompagnait, Hirai, se révèle avoir été remplacée par une torche à la fin de ce combat. Celle-ci sombre peu à peu dans l'oubli collectif puis disparaît au bout de quelques jours, Shana ayant assisté à son évaporation récupéra un peu de sa flamme et prit sa place dans le monde des humains, depuis ses camarades de classe l'appelent Hirai sans avoir remarqué quelque différence avec la précédente Hirai. Paradoxalement, l'existence de Yuuji persiste. Shana, la Flame haze, doit alors veiller sur lui malgré son ennui car il s'agit d'un Mistes, renfermant un pouvoir puissant, un hougu du nom de Reiji Maigo, lui permettant de rallumer sa torche toutes les 24 heures, à minuit. De ce fait, son intégration à la classe de Yuuji l'aide fortement à être à ses côtés en permanence, elle se révèle également très intelligente et terrorise certains de ses professeurs. Yuuji, désormais certain de ne plus disparaître, décide de l'aider activement dans sa lutte contre les Tomogara no Guze, seigneurs d'un monde parallèle dont une partie utilise la force vitale des humains pour gagner en pouvoir.

Starved is an FX Network television situation comedy that aired for one season of seven episodes in 2005. The series was about four friends who each suffer from eating disorders, who met at a "shame-based" support group called Belt Tighteners. Its characters included those with bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating disorder. Eric Schaeffer created the show as well as writing, starring in and directing it, based upon his own struggle with eating disorders. In addition to his own life experiences, Schaeffer also drew upon the experiences of the other members of the principal cast, each of whom coincidentally had struggled with food issues of their own. Starved was the lead-in of FX's hour-long "Other Side of Comedy" block with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. FX executives wanted to use the two series to begin building comedy programming and broaden the network's demographic. The series debuted on August 4, 2005 to poor critical reviews and was cancelled in October 2005, when FX picked Sunny over Starved for renewal.

Meerkat Manor is a British television programme produced by Oxford Scientific Films for Animal Planet International that premiered in September 2005 and ran for four series until its cancellation in August 2008. Blending more traditional animal documentary style footage with dramatic narration, the series told the story of the Whiskers, one of more than a dozen families of meerkats in the Kalahari Desert being studied as part of the Kalahari Meerkat Project, a long-term field study into the ecological causes and evolutionary consequences of the cooperative nature of meerkats. The original programme was narrated by Bill Nighy, with the narration redubbed by Mike Goldman for the Australian airings and Sean Astin for the American broadcasts. The fourth series, subtitled The Next Generation, saw Stockard Channing replacing Astin as the narrator in the American dubbing. Meerkat Manor premiered in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2005, and the first 13-episode series concluded on 24 October 2005. With the success of the programme in the United Kingdom, Animal Planet started broadcasting it on its national channels in Australia, Canada, and the US. It has since been rebroadcast in more than 160 other countries. The fourth, and final, series aired initially in the United States from 6 June 2008 to 22 August 2008; it aired in the United Kingdom in April 2009. In August 2009, it was reported that the programme had been cancelled.
