Nella primavera del 1950 gli Stati Uniti vengono inviati a partecipare alla Coppa del Mondo di calcio che si svolgerà in Brasile poiché il paese versa in una difficile condizione economica e non ha una vera e propria formazione, gli organizzatori cominciano a fare dei provini in giro per i Stati Uniti a numerosi ragazzi e mettere insieme una squadra improvvisata. Quando tutti giocatori si riuniscono, devono superare le barriere tra loro dei pregiudizi tra Nord e sud per imparare a collaborare ed essere una squadra. Arrivati a Rio senza essersi allenati a fondo, i ragazzi perdono la loro prima partita ufficiale. Demoralizzati ed impauriti, si trovano poi di fronte l'Inghilterra con la quale invece, incredibilmente vincono segnando più di un gol.
