Ierland, negende eeuw. Brendan, een opgewekte en goedlachse weesjongen van 12 leeft in de abdij van Kells dat verscholen ligt in een verlaten groene vallei. Hij wordt er streng opgevoed door zijn oom, de abt Cellach, die de abdij met ijzeren hand leidt. Op een dag ontmoet hij de oude broeder Aidan. Deze ietwat vreemde man is een meester in het illustreren en houdt een buitengewoon, nog onvoltooid boek in bewaring. Enthousiast en begeesterd door deze ontmoeting laat Brendan zich meeslepen door de lokroep van de creativiteit en verbeelding.
