Jojo ziet met eigen ogen hoe tegenstanders van het regime worden opgehangen. Zijn moeder (een formidabele rol van Scarlett Johansson) zit in het verzet, herbergt een jong Joods meisje als onderduiker, maar laat haar zoon zelf ontdekken hoe deze wereld in elkaar zit.
