De serie gaat over het tienjarige jongetje Timmy dat in de fictieve stad Dimmsdale woont. Hij heeft het zwaar te verduren: Ouders die nooit naar hem luisteren, en een gemene oppas genaamd Vicky, die hem onderdrukt als een slaaf. Doordat men in de feeënwereld merkt dat hij ongelukkig is, krijgt hij op een dag twee feeënpeetouders (Engels: Fairy Godparents) toegewezen; de onnozele fee Cosmo en zijn intelligente vrouw Wanda. Door met hun toverkunsten Timmy's wensen te laten uitkomen, proberen ze hem te helpen en gelukkiger te maken. De magie die Cosmo en Wanda gebruiken om Timmy te helpen, veroorzaakt meestal echter alleen nog maar meer rommel. In het begin zijn de wensen best leuk, maar langzamerhand begint het uit de hand te lopen. Uiteindelijk komt het allemaal weer goed.
