Hän myös rikkoi vahvasti aikansa naiskäsitystä – hän mm. miekkaili, metsästi karhuja ja pukeutui usein housuihin – ja ajautui väistämättä yhteenottoihin hovin konservatiivisten luterilaisten aatelismiehien kanssa. Hovi näki kuningattaren tärkeimpänä tehtävä naimisiinmenon ja perillisen, pojan, synnyttämisen. Kristiinalla oli kuitenkin korkeammat tavoitteet, hän halusi tarjota alamaisilleen koulutusta, vaalia tieteitä ja lopettaa kolmekymmenvuotisen sodan protestanttien ja katolisten välillä. Kristiinan rakkaus hovineitoaan, kaunista Ebba Sparrea kohtaan, hankaloitti entisestään hänen asemaansa.
